Obituary for Carol Copenhagen
Carol Anne Copenhagen
Resident of Orinda
Carol Anne Copenhagen passed away at home on November 21, 2017 after courageously battling for her life. Carol grew up in Orinda and graduated from Miramonte High School. Her lifelong love of the Spanish language and Latino cultures began during a gap year she spent in Argentina after high school. Carol graduated with degrees in Spanish and economics from Mills College before continuing her post graduate studies in medieval Spanish literature at Johns Hopkins University and the University of London. She earned a PhD in Spanish literature at UC Davis and was awarded a post-doctorate Fulbright Scholarship to do research in Spain. Dr. Copenhagen created innovative language learning curriculum for onsite, online and hybrid Spanish classes at UC Davis, St. Mary’s College, the College of Marin, Ohlone College and Berkeley City College. She was a teacher who appreciated her students’ diverse learning styles and was able to convey her love of the Spanish language and Latin American cultures in a way that made learning fun and engaging. From childhood on, Carol fostered a deep love of travel and enjoyed many adventures in Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia including leading several study abroad trips to Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile, and Spain. Carol filled her home with delicious aromas and food and believed in its power to bring people together. She loved music, art, animals, textiles and, above all, she loved her family.
Carol is survived by her dear mother, Anne (Richard, deceased); loving husband, Paul Hallaman; adoring daughters, Alice (James) and Georgia (Olvin); brothers Chris (Clarita), Keith(Belinda) and sister, Claire Bainer. She is also survived by her beloved nieces Star Maclin, Ellen Bainer (Nicola), Katherine, and Genevieve; her nephews Richard and Russell Bainer(Emily) and her grand nieces Dylan Maclin and Lillian Bainer and grand nephews Keith Maclin, Michael Bigbee and Arthur Bainer. Her kindness, generosity, beautiful singing voice, and wonderful smile will be missed by all who knew her. She possessed an exceptionally loving and powerful heart and through her determination and fierce intelligence she was able to accomplish many wonderful achievements even though her life was tragically cut short.
A celebration of the life of Carol Anne Copenhagen is being planned for early 2018 with a date and site to be determined.
